A little over two years ago I moved into a small house, by small I mean 580 sq ft. I had lost a decent paying job, and was fortunate enough to find an inexpensive place to live. I only had to pay 250.00 plus utilities per month. That’s right, a house for only 250.00 a month. Shortly after moving in I did start to feel a little cramped, but the price was right and I decided to make due.
I am a person who believes in the power of positive thinking, so at night when I went to bed, I would say “Thank you for my own house.” This went on for almost a year, before I began to repeat this to myself while driving.
To cut the story short, the person I was renting from had bought a bank owned property for another person we shall call Bob (not his real name of course). After two years without Bob making a payment I was approached about buying this property, the owner just wanted to get rid of it. I was offered the same deal Bob was offered… I only had to pay the purchase price (no interest), that’s right only twenty-four easy payments of 600.00, which equals 14,400.00. Without hesitation I jumped at the deal. I refused to give into negative thoughts, and it paid off. I was on my way to my dream.
Now, even though the house was a great price, as you can imagine it does have some issues. My house was built in 1898, which means it is now 111 yrs old. The structure is sound, all windows except one have been replaced (not sure why they left one), the roof is newer, and an addition had been added on to make the over all square footage 1420.
While Bob was here he turned the electric, and water on but never had the gas turned on, so the furnace and hot water tank had been off for 2 1/2 years. This was a major concern since I live in a cold winter state and I moved in in November. To my surprise the furnace turned right on with no problems, however, the hot water heater was not so kind to me. It took me 28 days to get hot water. The tank was good but I did have to invest 65.00 for a new thermostat. I am fortunate enough to know a HVAC person who was kind enough to work on my hot water heater without charging me labor.
I have gone through my new home and taken a lot of pictures, so many things need repaired, fixed or just completed, where someone started a renovation and never finished it. I am excited to document my adventure with pictures, and text. There are somethings I will need to hire out, but for the most part I plan to do the work myself. This means it is going to be an ongoing project since I work a full time job. For those of you who wish to follow, I welcome any suggestions.
